I’ve been seventeen for a while now. I’m no longer forced to attend church services for a religion I don’t profess. I’m no longer forced to exercise. At last, I’m exempt from compulsory education.

Buddies

I and every other second grader at my elementary school was paired with a “buddy,” a personal mentor from the fifth grade. The fifth graders, armed with three years surplus experience, seemed to us the inscrutable equals of teenagers and adults. And they were eager to act the part.

There Is No Such Thing as a Rebellious Teenager

There is a rumor going around that teenagers are often rebellious.  Some variants of the rumor prefer defiant, unruly, or stubborn, but a thesaurus worth of synonyms can do nothing to remedy its falsehood.  In truth, compared to adults, adolescents are extremely compliant.

School Doesn’t “Socialize” Kids

In my previous post, I explained why I hate school, citing mainly its academic worthlessness.  Some agree that school largely fails to educate, but they maintain that we need it because it “socializes” children—or teaches them to interact with other people.  I find this argument pathetic.
